It does look like multiple plants. The leaves are small because it is not getting enough light. They can handle just shy of full blazing sun *outdoor*. It is really, really hard to get too much light indoors. It wants to be acclimated to the brightest spot in the home where it is right by the sunniest window.
Yup, there are So Many plants in this pot! Rn they are competing pretty vigorously for nutrients and light, so can’t grow to their full potential.
You are right to split them. The individual plants should be easy to separate once you extract the root ball and separate the root structures. They can handle a bit of damage to their roots, but be as gentle as you can.

Mine is the same there’s loads of smaller leaves I the bottom so I think separating them is the right course of action
