I bought a possumhaw holly from HEB before it had leafed out/ flowered, and only after planting it did I realize that these trees are either male or female. It started to leaf out and flower unevenly (the left side started first), but I thought that could have just been due to transplant shock. When it did flower I was happily surprised to see female flowers! (2nd pic) Then the right side started to leaf out and flower and I noticed these were male. (3rd pic) So it turns out what I thought was a multi-trunked tree is actually 2 trees.

Should I just leave them as is or should I try to split them up? I did plant this specifically for the birds, so having the two right next to each other should make pollination a breeze and ensure the birds get their berries. But I’m also thinking about aesthetics and I feel like it might look weird in the winter if only half of the tree (since it still appears as one) is holding berries. Would there be anything else concerning about having these right next to each other?
