we're in Philly. long-time lurker, first time poster.

any suggestions for an alternative to grass for the middle part of the yard, that can withstand high traffic (we have a crazy puppy), and doesn't grow more than 6"ish?

forgive the mess, as our patio was just redone with the permeable pavers and stuff is just strewn about everywhere šŸ˜‚ I plan to load up the garden bed (left side towards the back) with veggies and flowers. our composter will live there where it is now. my pots of wildflowers are already sprouting, in their second year. the thing under the tree is a creeping jenny, which I have just learned are not native so back in her pot she probably will go. I might fill in around the tree/between the large pavers with pebbles, as it's mostly shaded when the tree is full.

We put in some Rupturewort plugs early last year. We picked it because it is supposed to take heavy foot traffic and not need a lot of water. It’s doing well. It started as 1ā€ plants and this year it is over 6ā€ wide. I lays very flat to the ground.

Can’t go wrong with American violets for that spot!

And please don’t put pebbles around your tree, stick with mulch. The pebbles will concentrate and reflect heat down into the soil and up into the branches of your tree, and also put too much weight on your tree’s root zone for the tree’s comfort.

Yarrow. I’m currently replacing my easement lawn with it and am super pleased with the results so far. It stays green year-round and forms a carpet like grass. It sends up pretty flowers 1-2x in the summer that you can just cut down with a hedge trimmer. No mowing required ✨

Also that unironically is a nice backyard given your neighborhood.
