First time palm tree owner so I'm unsure if this is dead now or some growth shedding/falling thing.

Yes. It will die.
Yeah, that’s a done tree. Palms grow from the top, and this one has no top. My condolences.

How did it just… fall off? The tree doesn’t look *that* old.
Yup. They have one single growing point and cannot “back bud”
It smelled pretty bad when I picked it up to bin it so I wasn’t hopeful but I’ve never had anything like this in my garden so I wasn’t sure if it would sprout up again. It’s a shame, it was really lovely so I guess we’ll try and grow a replacement.
