Celebrating 60 years since its formation, Fermanagh Gardening Society marks a significant milestone in its rich history of promoting horticulture across the county.

Since its beginnings in 1966, the society has brought together generations of gardening enthusiasts, fostering a shared passion for flowers, plants and the natural environment.

Its Diamond Anniversary not only reflects decades of dedication and community spirit, but also highlights the enduring appeal of gardening in Fermanagh, as the society continues to grow, evolve and inspire.

According to records, Fermanagh Gardening Society was formed 60 years ago with the help of the Rotary Club. Its first meeting took place on February 14, 1966 and was held in Enniskillen Town Hall.

The current President, Mrs Evelyn Cruwys, has given generously of her time for more than 50 years, fulfilling many different roles within the society.

A special feature of the society is its Annual Daffodil and Spring Flower Show, with the first show taking place in April 1966, when Honorary Member Brian Duncan MBE VMH advised on the initial schedule. Show secretary Charlotte Gordon has worked extremely hard on this year’s schedule.

On Friday, April 10 , beginning at 12 noon, the society will host its 58th show in the Killyhevlin Hotel, Enniskillen.

The 2001 show was cancelled due to Foot and Mouth, as were the 2020 and 2021 shows due to Covid-19.

On Friday evening, a Gala Dinner and Prizegiving will take place in the Killyhevlin to celebrate the society’s Diamond Anniversary.

Fermanagh Gardening Society is also pleased to join with the Northern Ireland Daffodil Group, which is celebrating its Golden Anniversary at this time.

The guest speaker for this special occasion is Clodagh Dunlop MBE, and the Royal Horticultural Society Bulb Expert Group will be welcomed to the celebration.

This expert group will also assist with judging at the show, where classes include not only daffodils but also general flowers, art and photography.

There are always special classes for children and young people. For the past five years, the “School Garden of the Year” has been a popular category, with schools competing for the coveted title. This year, the RHS Bulb Expert Group is looking forward to seeing what Fermanagh schools are achieving in this area.

During the show, there will be children’s activities, as well as talks by the visiting expert group, including two on bulbs and a question-and-answer session.

There will also be a wide range of garden stalls from specialist nurseries, along with the Fermanagh Gardening Society Members’ Plant Stall, which has traditionally been a major attraction at the show.
