I’m a first year innkeeper and i have this space to grow whatever i want (non-invasive). I plan to put sunflowers against the back fence then a couple sections with vegetables and the front two sections with flowers, emphasizing butterfly feeding species. Any thoughts or advice? I come from 230+ years of farming but i’m the first-gen city boy. Help me avoid generational shame from the skies above and snickering from the netherrealm!

I’d do flowering herbs. Useful for the kitchen and beautiful looking.

Lavender, monarda, mint (safe cos it’s in a container!), oregano, thyme. This makes it easier because they should also come back each year. Plus they look welcoming!

Sprinkle in some annuals like Sweet Alyssum, snap
    Dragons, sweet potato vines, etc!

If you wanted tomatoes, do tomatoes with Sweet Alyssum, rainbow Chard and annual herbs (like the cilantro) as companion plants. All in one container. The flowers will dramatically spill over the edge and look lovely. Pair a tomato or showy flower, like a sun flower, as the center plant and add friends on the sides.

Pick up a book on container gardening and companion plants because the rules are different than in the ground planting.
