I’ve just moved to Pemberton in the southwest of WA and discovered this little guy in the backyard. I’m thinking it’s a stone tree. I would love to know what type and if it can be saved?

Thank you

Leaves look like my nectarines. But could those rotten fruit you see be almonds maybe?

I’m also no expert but I don’t think the tree is having too much drama. The leaves still there are mostly green, and we’re in autumn now – it’ll soon be dropping all of the leaves entirely.

I reckon remove the grass around the base of the tree, and prune off any branches that look dead (if any). But otherwise don’t see any reason to be alarmed.

Looks like what my peach tree is doing right now

Hairy dead fruit suggests peach to me but could be a nectarine that’s just shrivelled and gone mouldy.

It’s likely it can be saved. To asses the health of it, you need clear the grass away to expose the base. If the trunk is in good condition and not rotted then mulch, fertiliser, shaping and possibly some fungicide if it’s got visible sap oozing from it.

Clear a space around the trunk and put mulch down. Then just as it’s budding next spring, spray copper sulphate to prevent leaf curl, once the buds and leave pop add fertiilisers of choice. Had a really rough looking Peach tree at a home we mmoved into years ago, took a couple of seasons but it now produces a good amount of Peaches for us.

Looks like a stone fruit of some kind, and those are pits on the ground.

It definitely hasn’t been taken care of judging by the shape of it, but with a decent prune it could be fine
