I've been collecting seeds and growing seedlings indoors that I'm excited to finally give a home. My neighbors left me all their pots and planters, and I think the soil hasn't been touched in years. I'm trying to fix up this outdoor space but I'm a total newbie.
Can I just pull the weeds and mix in some compost/topper to bring it back to life? Or is this old neglected soil more trouble than it's worth, and I need to start fresh?
The reason I'm hoping to salvage it: I'm up several flights of stairs from the street, so hauling bags of dirt down is a real project. I'll do it if I have to, but I would love to avoid it. Any advice appreciated! Thanks for reading.

Pull the weeds and mix in fresh compost and potting soil to fill whatever is low. Then plant away!
Bring inside until last frost.
Do you have access to a hose up there? One thing to consider is the smaller the container, the faster it will dry out. By July my rooftop garden here needs water several times a week.
I believe you have some perennial herbs in here. The grass looking stuff looks like chives, and it makes sense that it would be sending up new green leaves this early. Some of the circular pots *might* be oregano, mint, or thyme. Pinch some of the leaves off, and give them a sniff before you weed them. You can eat the dandelion by the way, it tastes like arugula.
