Many of us take our gardening knowledge for granted and forget that the basics of gardening need to be a period focus to advance our gardening experience. Gardener Scott discusses and explains basic gardening terms, answers gardening questions, shares gardening philosophy, and more. (Mar 23, 2026)

⚠️ PLEASE READ THE LIVESTREAM GUIDANCE HERE: ⚠️

⚠️ If you put ”@Gardener Scott” at the beginning of your question, it will be easier for me to see. QUESTIONS WITH ALL CAPS ARE NOT HELPFUL.
⚠️ As I see questions, I’ll do my best to answer in the order they appear. However, if someone gives a “super chat” or “super sticker” with a question, their question becomes a priority and moves to the front of the queue. Channel members will receive priority. Comments that pertain to the topic of the week are also more likely to be acknowledged.
⚠️ Because I have a limited amount of time, if I miss a super chat question this week, it will be answered at the beginning of my next livestream next week.
⚠️ Your super chat/sticker is a donation that I appreciate very much.
⚠️⚠️ I’m answering YouTube questions to give actionable tips you can use to become a better gardener. While I have many years of gardening experience and training, please understand that every garden is different and my suggestions may not be the best action for your garden. I encourage you get information from other sources too.

  1. I built a different kind of raised bed (That is, a gardening friend offered to make one & had it done in two hours). It's 3' / nearly 1 meter high for zero bending and it is also solid, no airspace or table legs. The base is cement blocks fitted solidly together. Next weathered wood panels on all sides cut from repurposed privacy fence panels. This covers the blocks and holds soil.

These materials were from earlier projects, already in the yard. And some rust free wood screws to attach the pieces of wood panels to each other at the corners. It's both strong and possible to disassemble as the blocks are dry laid, no mortar.

Plants gain a little frost protection as heat rises / cold sinks. There's protection from soil diseases and most pests except rodents like squirrels. Insects that hide under leaves are easy to spot.

  2. It's an occupational hazard for educators to forget that simple concepts and terminology can be completely foreign to someone who hasn't been exposed to them before. 2+2=4 is an easy concept, but all of us had to be taught this at least once. Good on you for remembering that. You may be retired from the Galileo school, but you're still a top tier educator.

  3. I really appreciate you pointing out the fact that what works in one area might not work in another, and encouraged us to do what works for us! I've always been jealous of the people who live in an area who never have to irrigate or who can grow year round! (I'm in Northern Utah)

  4. It was such a treat to attend the live for the first time in months. As always, you share great info & advice that is of the moment. Definitely going to be adding more compost to my beds this year. Red

  5. By definition, a seals is a low lying ditch, usually vegetative to convey rainwater runoff. It is not elevated.
