Last year I tried growing yarrow from seed with quite underwhelming results – they never grew taller than maybe 1/2"
Now I'm already seeing a ton of vigorous-looking yarrow in my raised bed.
Question: are they too crowded? should I separate some of these and plant elsewhere to give them some space or is it fine for them to be this crowded?

If I were you I would just leave them there for now. They will send out little rhizomes and grow as a nice ground cover. Later you can always split off what you don’t want and plant them elsewhere.
nah, let them cook this whole year and then separate them in the winter. they should turn into a big ol luscious loaf like this:
