Too much hook in my filing?

Not sure why my entire description is gone, but I’m gonna sum it up, first photo is a 3/8 full chisel hand filed with a round file, the second photo is the organ EXL 3/8 full chisel out of the box. It looks a lot more mellow than my file. The what are the pros if any for that Crazy hook I have going on on the whole chain? Does it still cut good? PS that EXL is a full skip, not sure if that matters. And for everyone else I’m asking because I have nothing big enough to cut right now and I don’t wanna have to deal with it when I do have to cut something if I’ve made a mistake filing.

  2. Looks fine, if you’re 90% close to factory grind and your rakers are set correctly or low enough it’ll cut well enough till it’s dull and needs to be sharpened again.
It doesn’t look excessively hooked and it doesn’t look dull.
Depends on file size also, stihl run a slightly smaller 13/64 compared to the 7/32 for 3/8 chain, so there’s some difference between those chain grinds too.

You did great. You want to leave a “shark fin” grove in the tooth. Also check your rakers every time you file. Also make sure you are at the correct angle when filing. I’m sure you already know but there is an angle guide on top of each tooth. Find the worst tooth and file that one down till it’s sharp and at the correct angle. Remember your stroke count for each tooth. Then get stroking on the rest with the same stroke count. I’ve worked for the forest service for 15 years. I’ve cut 1000’s of trees so I know a good stroke job when I see one.

Some good advice and chain sharpening here. And it looks like your bar has a bit of a burr along the edge. Take the chain off and run a flat file across it
