Most of the damage is on the south side of the tree. I believe the damage is sunscald related (western NY). Thanks!

    That may be sunscald, but it’s the most severe case I’ve ever seen. I think there may be something else that caused this. Regardless, I don’t think this tree will survive for long…half of its vascular system (the vessels that carry water up and sugars down) has been compromised.

    Frost cracks. Tree will recover but open wound for pests and diseases

    It could. I think i see some response wood inside those cracks. But it’s time for replacement.

    You need photos of the crown. Peel away the fully detached bark and show what it looks like underneath and along the perimeter for better assessment.

    If it was only the bark issue it might have been salvageable, but that deep crack says it’s a goner.
