So I've had it for about 3 weeks, maybe 2 weeks ago my tortoise got into the green house and specifically knocked it over and pretty much dragged it out of the GH. I thought it had ate it at first until I found it behind the GH. Repotted it and looked at it today and it looks worse…not sure if it was getting cooked in the partial light or too much stress from it all

  1. It probably dried out. They don’t tolerate drought very well.

Yeah I was watering every other day, looks like not enough. Do you think it’s done for? I’m gonna up the water and pray 😞

  3. Im sorry im inexperienced with welwitschia and wont be of much help…. but of my god the mental image of a rambunctious tortoise breaking in to a greenhouse is absolutely adorable! You gotta pay the tortuga tax

Im pretty new to growing the species, but have already done quite a bit of research. I’m about 3 weeks into getting the single seed I purchased to germinate, and hes just starting to grow his pair of forever leaves!

From what I’ve learned, welwitschia really hates having their roots bothered and damaged. Especially during the first few years to life. This is why it recommend to germinate seeds in the same tall pot that they will remain in for the first 3-5 years.

What is your soil mix made of, 100% gritty, well draining inorganic soil it usually what is recommended. You want their roots to stay slightly moist at all times but not wet as well.

Unfortunately, imo it looks like she’s probably a goner. I’m guessing the roots go damaged and started to rot in the moist soil and/or is now unable to take up water.
