I have a flowering plum that is approximately 18-20 years old. starting last spring I noticed black knot fungus on the tips of some of the branches. this spring im seeing it much more. not on the trunk but on many branches. ive tried removing as much as I can but there is way too much especially high up on the tree. wil Copper fungicide work or does all of the existing fungus have to be removed in order for it to be effective? Or is this tree basically at the end of its lifespan ?

Yes you must physically remove all of the infected branches before applying any fungicides. Fungicides will not fix what’s already infected. Unfortunately black knot can be hard to fight off and requires a lot of work to do so with no guarantee of winning the fight. Best of luck to you of you decide to try to fight it.
Make sure you burn whatever material you remove immediately to help eliminate some of the spores. Also disinfect any tools that you use between every cut to help prevent spreading the fungus to healthy tissues.
