A couple were moved to tears following one of Alan Titchmarsh’s most controversial garden makeovers.
The popular gardening presenter and his team intervened to revive a severely neglected outdoor area, however the final design divided opinion amongst viewers. On ITV1’s Love Your Garden, Alan assisted pensioners Rob and Margaret Isdale who have fostered over 150 children over the last 45 years.
In recognition of how this remarkable couple have provided a loving home for numerous youngsters, Alan and his co-presenters Katie Rushworth, David Domoney and Frances Tophill were committed to transforming their drab and uninspiring garden into a magical space drawing inspiration from The Secret Garden, as a gesture of gratitude to a pair who have given so generously.
The team’s concept involved converting the couple’s shed into a mock Tudor-style building, whilst adding several weathered brick columns – or as Alan called them, “ancient looking follies” – essentially scattering the garden with atmospheric ruins. Alan explained to viewers: “I want this new garden to make them feel as cared for as the children who come to their home.”

Whilst the completed garden represented an undeniable transformation, not everyone was convinced, especially regarding the artificial brick ruins.
Viewer @besidetheriver remarked: “Omg! The Love Your Garden people ruining that lovely garden … with bricks and concrete! No thank you!”
@lally55p observed: “It’s too crowded and busy for me but as long as they like it.”

At the end of the programme, Alan presented the transformed garden to the thrilled couple. Upon seeing the renovated space, the pair were instantly brought to tears, expressing to Alan: “Goodness me! It’s the best I’ve seen it looking. Woah. Thank you so much. I can’t believe it – it’s just….”
Alan then disclosed: “We found the ruins of an old abbey in your garden.”
“Brilliant!” Margaret then laughed whilst Rob added: “I knew it would be special but that’s extra special. Thank you so much.””
Alan and his crew then assembled many of the 150 foster children the couple have looked after throughout the years to appreciate the garden in a touching and substantial family gathering.
