Wondering when to harvest sunflower seeds? Timing is everything. 🌻

If you want big, fully developed edible seeds, don’t rush it. You can cut the head when it’s yellow if you need to protect it from birds (just leave a few inches of stem and hang it upside down to finish ripening).

For the fullest seeds, letting it ripen on the plant is best. Wait until the back of the sunflower head turns brown, that’s your best sign the seeds have finished developing and the kernels are plump.

Cut, dry, and enjoy. I like them raw and roasted. Don’t forget to save a few to plant next year.

  1. Ik I say this every time, but I love this channel and I’m so grateful for u!!! I’m you have helped me so much in my gardening journey 🫶🏾🫶🏾. Also I wonder if the birds eating the seeds is a good indicator that they’re ready. I had to cut some flowers off to save for myself bc the birds kept eating the seeds 😂

  2. Every single one of my sunflowers get loaded with tiny catepillars the burrow through the seeds and shells

  3. What variety did you plant? It’s beautiful! Where I live, it’s very hard to start them because of the critters. This year, I am experimenting with starting them in containers and transplanting them. I transplanted my seedlings two days ago. They have already tripled in size. If the squirrels don’t decapitate them later…I may have 9 sunflowers. If transplants work for me this year, I would really like to try that variety next year.

  4. What type of sunflower is that. I planted some "mammoth sunflowers," and they grew tall with many small to medium-sized blooms. I was expecting a big bloom like yours lol but maybe i was doing something wrong. Anyone looking to grow sun flowers should. They're so easy to care for, and seeing them grow tall is really amazing.

  5. Imagine how wonderful God is!🙏❤ He created Sunflower🌻 that bears seeds which has plenty of health benefits for human consumption. Amazing!
