So ive been contemplating doing a home addition and my beloved lilac bush is in the general area where I would consider extending. Unfortunately i dont think i could build out in another direction due to septic tank and field and im worried the bush would be harmed if i built up since its close to the house. Im wondering what the chances of survival would be if I had it removed with a tree spade and transplanted to the back yard. Would it help if I had a hole already dug to much larger size and added as good of soil as I could?
I've had great luck transplanting other trees and shrubs but ive never moved anything this big or old.
Would love some advice on this.

Use your native soil for the new hole. You can fertilize on top when you’re done but having an ultra ammended planting hole surrounded by native soil can discourage roots from venturing out so to speak.
If you’re using a tree spade you should have no problem at all. To increase survival rate I would prune it back a decent amount.
