Any minute now you will see so many little yellowish-green spots close to the edge of the woods. The wonderful spicebush is about to bloom. Take a minute and look at those beautiful little bushes, feeding bugs, hosting butterflies and looking great!

Wonderful! I’ve been obsessed with growing them ever since I learned they were the host plant for spicebush swallowtails, but my first attempts were thwarted by rabbits. Hoping I can learn from my mistakes and protect them better next time 🤞🏻

  2. Reminds me I got 2 of these planted last year. One was barely hanging on, I think it got too much sun. I moved it late in the season so hopefully it comes back. Gotta get out and check on them once the snow is gone.

Edit: checked and no growth yet. Pretty much everything is still dormant. Witch hazel is forming buds but no flowers – someone elsewhere in my state found one with flowers already.

I planted mine 2 seasons ago when they were 6 inch plugs. Today they’re only 2 feet tall. They get 5-6 hours of sun, soil is moist and I feed them once a month with fish oil. I don’t know why they’re not growing in NC Zone 8 🙁
