So that bit of bald patch in my yard has never been in great shape, but with 4 dogs in the house it’s finally had it after 2 years of living here. What are my options? I’d like to DIY it if possible. In an ideal world a solution would cause it not to get muddy during rain, let me pass my mower over it safely, and it would be able to stand up to the dogs digging at it (or be easily repairable). I’ve heard converting it to mulch/gravel, or planting clover would help. Any thoughts?

Pave between steps and gate. Mulch the remainder and plant shrubs on the slope that you’ll protect from dogs with little enclosures for a couple years. You might seed clover or another durable ground cover along edges and allow them to creep around if you want a natural feel. I’m allowing self sown clover, yarrow and dichondra to remain but it looks pretty splotchy since I didn’t put seed down.

Make a wide paver area. You can get paver stones at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Watch some tutorials. You’ll definitely want to dig out the area and put leveling gravel underneath so the pavers don’t shift. Sounds intimidating but totally doable. Clover and anything alive won’t stand a chance with dogs. Do not just dump rocks or gravel. They will get everywhere and be a huge muddy mess. Ask me how I know. I inherited a huge muddy gravel nightmare when I bought our home and it’s taking years to get rid of all of it.
