Planning annual containers at the nursery can feel overwhelming. You grab plants you like, but once you get home the colors, sizes, and combinations don’t always work. Stop the guesswork. 1. Steph, I am like you; my backyard is a tropical garden in New Jersey, which is hard to keep. My front yard is all flowers. You have given me so much inspiration for my garden.

  2. Excellent video! Thank you! My must have plant that I use every year is Supertunia Bordeaux. I just love it! This year I am going to try a blue, white and lime green color scheme.

  3. Hi Steph I notice you don’t put mulch in your containers but I’ve found out by me doing so is having negative impact. Your recipes for your containers are beautiful thanks for sharing

  4. Beautiful planters.. especially since it was full sun, with which I struggle! I wish I could get Proven Winners plants, as the ones I’ve had were fabulous in my hot sunny location. But sadly only a few scattered places have one or two petunias but nothing more. I have made several requests but nothing has changed. The plants I do get are ok but challenging and results are hit or miss. I’m thinking of just getting more succulents and giving up. Too much $ wasted. Geraniums are my color now. Sigh.

  5. First-time watcher and this video provided SO MUCH good information! I immediately subscribed and have watched multiple videos. You provided so much education, and your garden is BEAUTIFUL. Thank you!

  6. Go to for me are any Calibrochoa, New Guinea impatience for shade with coleus and sun patience . I have turquoise and navy blue planters with navy poly wood furniture and some turquoise zero gravity chairs. My outdoor rugs are navy and turquoise. So my go to color flowers are peach, orange, orangy reds. I sprinkle purples and some yellow. Always add a fern or two in containers. I have about 75-90 planter pots. I am flower obsessed. Each year I am going to cut back so I have less watering 😂🤣

  7. Steph, thank you….this will be so helpful!! I used to wander all the aisles….not any longer with the website suggestions! ❤

  8. What a great tool on the proven winners site. Thanks for sharing. My favorites are the supertunia latte, with the dark sweet potato vine. I also love peachy keen. I was able to winter over the Capia vermillionaire on my porch. The hummingbirds loved it last year. Still a lot of snow to melt here in western Massachusetts, but this weeks warmup should help. Happy Gardening 🩷

  9. Thank you for all these great ideas! I’ve been amateur gardening for years and need to start doing more planning. I’ll go to 5-6 garden centers and just buy what I think I’ll like and then try to put my containers together. That’s a bad habit! I appreciate all your videos! ☀️☀️☀️

  10. First time here 👋🏼 do you have any videos or tips for inside plants/flowers for home and office? Which to use, etc. Thanks!

  11. Your videos are always so informative and helpful! I had no idea about "Recipes" listed on Proven Winner's website. So thank you for that. Keep up the good work. I really love your site and also seeing your beautiful grounds!

  12. I’m trying to grow some native grasses under grow lights this early spring. We still have snow..ugggghh. I’m hoping to use a couple of them in our fro door containers for the thriller. Here’s hoping they will be my go to. Love your channel Stef!!
    😊🇨🇦🌷💕🌼🥰

  13. I've been overwintering a beautiful red geranium and I want to plant it with blue sky lobelia and white gaira. I think the theme of red white and blue is going to be very popular this year

  14. This was wonderful to see because I enjoy combining plants but sometimes they don't grow and expand the way I expect and it can look kind of funny. Very helpful information, thank you!

  15. Great video Steph! This is a keeper I’ll be referring to often. Thank you for sharing. Several years ago I started doing a yearly pot plan. My biggest challenge has been getting the plants I want at the right time. This year I’ve ordered more thru mail order to have the right plants at the start of pot season. As far as pot formulas . . . I love a black urn filled with apple blossom impatients. The pale pink against the black pot looks stunning. Also for a dark, moody pot I love wild rose heuchera, purple sage, and a purple mum. Really stunning in a light colored container.

  16. Thank you so much for all your ideas. I have a question. What size is the planter where you planted the vintage coral superbells? Thank you

  17. Thanks for taking the time to scroll and let us know all the options. I've used some, but you found more than I did. I'm going to enjoy the window box area, I have several deck planters (kind of the size of a window box). Plus, the tree that was behind them, to give them shade, is now gone, so, I now have to rethink what will grow in full sun. Thanks!! Cuphea – the ph is pronounced "F", cufea.

  18. The supertunia called Bubblegum is the best I have ever had…Up here in Ontario I plant after May 24. That is usually the rule because of the frost . Its hard not to plant before . I now have my over wintered geraniums planted inside two weeks ago and they are all of a sudden thriving. Great videos . I was thinking about putting palm trees in the front deck in my planters..not sure tho. Three years ago I was at the garden center and the associate showed me mazoo. I bought three tiny plants and put them in my hangers on my lamp posts. I was thrilled how fast they grew, how they look and with all the flowers on them. I couldn't let them all go with the winter coming so I took slips and brought them indoors. I also transplanted a huge one and brought it in., They make a great house plant also. One of my favorites now

  19. I use one plant per container and they grow huge. I would suggest a maximum of three in larger containers. Jamming too many in wastes money as some get choked out. I do enjoy your videos and lovely ideas.
