Fans of gardening guru Charlie Dimmock could be excused for not exploring much beyond her Ground Force and Garden Rescue catalogue. With over 150 episodes of Garden Rescue available for viewing and 97 instalments of the 90s sensation Ground Force, there’s ample content to keep audiences occupied.
However, throughout her career, she has created numerous other horticultural programmes that remained relatively unknown.
One such programme is Charlie’s Garden Army, which aired in 1999 and 2000 across 12 episodes. The series featured Charlie alongside a team of volunteers transforming desolate areas into beautiful gardens for public enjoyment.
She subsequently secured presenting duties on 2002’s The Joy of Gardening and 2001’s Charlie’s Gardening Neighbours.

In 2005, Charlie appeared at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show as a television presenter, and she’s also featured at the Chelsea Flower Show on multiple occasions.
According to IMDb ratings alone, though, there are several programmes that surpass Ground Force in terms of viewer appreciation. Ground Force holds an average rating of 7.2 stars out of 10 – yet it’s overshadowed by Garden Rescue at 7.9 stars, alongside the Great British Garden Revival which shares the same rating.
Charlie inadvertently fell into a television career whilst she was employed at a garden centre, and during the 90s, she maintained that she “wasn’t famous” and didn’t perceive herself as a TV personality.

Reflecting on her television work in a 1999 interview with The Guardian, Charlie stated: “In some ways, the television stuff isn’t unsatisfying, it’s very interesting. But the other day, I was at work [at the garden centre], the first time I’d been there properly for three or four weeks, and I thought, ‘God, this is nice!’
“‘You see people you know, regular customers, and there’s no hassle. You fall out of bed, go to work, potter around. It’s all right, really.'”
British garden makeover series Ground Force was originally broadcast by the BBC between 1997 and 2005. The series was originally hosted by Charlie, alongside Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh.
Garden Rescue, which launched a decade ago, features top designers, including Charlie, who are on a mission to transform lacklustre outdoor spaces into magical wonderlands.
Garden Rescue is on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
