There used to be a garden here. Well, we let it go and now it’s just these small little stubs that are really tough and hard to get out. Any tips like what tools I should use besides a shovel and garden hoe?

If the roots are too much to dig out, just cut them to the ground. After that, just keep cutting them regularly with the mower or weedwhip, eventually they’ll run out of energy

  2. Cut them off near the ground and paint their stumps with stump killer. It will prevent the tree or shrub from regrowing and it will eventually rot.

Mattock and loppers. That one is nearly out. Cut the big roots, slam the mattock underneath and pry. Push stump to find more roots to cut. If you give up remove as much as possible and cover with plastic/carpet/? then the dirt.

Cut them till you can and immediately pour boiling water on it it would die and you could easily get rid of it
