weve had this clumping bamboo for over 3 years now and I remember in winter it gets less green, but it IS an evergreen, and doesn’t ever look dead the way it does now. these leaves are obviously not coming back… even if new shoots come up, what do I do with all these dead shoots? we just did a super hard prune in the fall. im so concerned this plant is dead.

I’d be surprised if it could die. I dig and spray bamboo my neighbor planted that is spreading into my yard and even that doesn’t kill it.

If the leaves are totally brown and crispy and the canes look gray/tan and dry, those particular shoots are very likely dead. Evergreen just means it *can* keep foliage year-round, not that every cane survives tough winters. Clumping bamboo will often sacrifice older canes after stress (hard prune + cold can definitely do it), but the real test is at the base: if you see any green when you lightly scratch a cane, or firm, healthy rhizomes and new buds at soil level, the plant itself is still alive. Go ahead and cut fully dead canes all the way down to the ground. They won’t recover, and removing them makes room for new shoots. Then wait for spring warmth before panicking; if the roots are healthy, it should push new growth once temperatures stabilize.

looks pretty crispy might recover but hard to say hard to tell what that is -Fargesia rufa?

You absolutely can kill clumping golden bamboo. Didn’t think it was possible till I divided some roughly and missed a couple watering.

Of course the bamboo i actually wanted died.. but I cant for the life of me get rid of the normal kind fully.

  7. Hopefully.

Take this as a sign and NEVER plant bamboo ever again.

You’ll wish it was dead but no. It’ll probably regrow from the roots.

I know this is the non-invasive type. But still, I doubt it ever dies. Likely those shoots above the ground are dead, and the roots will produce new growth when it warms up. I would just cut back the dead stuff when you see signs of life.

It will probably come back up from the roots. Killed the foliage. They are in planters so a bit more risky but I’m sure it’s fine. You may have to cut back the dead stuff.

I’m in MD, so not quite Michigan weather, but we have had our fair share of temps below 10 degrees this year. My clumping bamboo is as gree as it was in October.

It’s not it’s just dormant. I’m bamboozled someone would do this particular plant/planter arrangement but I seen people do some wild shit for privacy.

It’s Michigan in February. Why wouldn’t this be dead? Is this meant to be an evergreen bamboo?

If you’ve found a way to kill bamboo please let me know asap

Without knowing the species, let it go through the summer and look for new growth. Some bamboos do get dead leaves in the winters during particularly cold snaps. I have arrowhead bamboo that grows invasely here and when it goes below 15, the upper canopy and exposed leaves will yellow. But it just grows new ones in the summer. OTOH I had some black bamboo in a pot that is supposedly hardy here but it died.

I’m curious, is there a particular reason you like to grow this?

  17. SoapboxSerenade

Its not dead, you can see how green the stalks are.

Maybe… JUST MAYBE its fucking winter in Michigan? Its still grass, grass growing real well in Michigan right now?

  18. Familyof5toypoodles

Consider yourself lucky they are a nightmare to get rid of!!!

  19. adognameddanzig

I would not consider that bamboo an evergreen in Michigan. I’m sure its alive still, just needs to be cut back.

  20. No-Turnover1658

Not dead, just waiting on the appropriate weather to burst through, a good trim wouldn’t hurt!

  21. screamingcarnotaurus

Cut back to the ground after last frost.

  22. Heavy_Permission5704

Doesn’t everything die Michigan in the winter. It will be ok. I am a buckeye and had this in our yard

  23. DrButtgerms

Wow look at all those new garden stakes you grew!

    Sweet beds too, btw!

  24. RUKiddingMeReddit

You can grow that up here in Michigan?

  25. wordsmythy

I don’t know I see a lot of green underneath. Give it a month or so.

  26. ConfectionMindless65

Bamboo is grass. Unless you sprayed roundup all over it, it WILL come back. Facts.

  27. Gardeningotter

Mine looks pretty rough also right now, last time it looked like this I lost some canes but it mostly just dropped all the leaves and flushed out new
