I am very new to gardening (just started last Spring) and I planned some Swiss Chard at my dad's request. My germination rate was pretty low but what we got made more than enough for what he wanted. I mostly ignored them and they were happy in these grow bags with a rather small amount of soil.

With these root structures sticking out of the soil all winter (Raleigh NC, 8a), are these likely dead or are they something I could pull up and transplant into a better container with healthier spacing?

Swiss chard is biennial, so these will likely go to seed quite quickly. You’d typically start new chard each year. The root structures in this case are beets 🙂
