I'm thinking of adding a mulched flower bed along the front wall with some small hedges, any other ideas that would be fairly easy to DIY for one person and wouldn't run me more than $500?

3 Pillar cedars if your zone will permit it. What ever you have planed for a flower box, make it bigger and plant taller than you think you need and make sure it extends out past your eves as it will be too dry under them. Foundations and water don’t mix. You could design a beautiful walking path through a good forest. The fence is perfect to support that! Check marketplace for cheap perennials in the spring and fall. Used lumber and free bricks. One $5 raspberry shoot can be easily cloned and propagated with time. Lots of local seed groups out there too. You should be able to find decent shrubs for $15-30 at a nursery. Just make sure they are
Meant for your zone and micro biome. An apple tree in the middle of the yard would be amazing in about 10 years.

Take a pic and ask for landscape design on one of the AI sites. Works pretty good.
