Seedy Saturday, a much-anticipated annual community event, returns this spring to celebrate seeds, sustainable gardening, and the joy of growing. Hosted by the Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society, the event encourages seed sharing, gardening education, and environmentally responsible practices.

“For many gardeners, Seedy Saturday marks the true beginning of the growing season,” said Rod G. Morrison, president of the Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society. “It’s the first event of the year that really gets people thinking about spring and what they want to plant.”

Seedy Saturday promotes the use of open-pollinated and heirloom seeds, which play a vital role in conserving genetic diversity and protecting unique plant varieties at a time when agricultural biodiversity is under increasing threat. These seed varieties also offer an important historical connection to gardening and food production, helping to preserve garden heritage for future generations.

By choosing open-pollinated and heirloom seeds, gardeners actively contribute to biodiversity conservation while becoming part of the stories and traditions behind the seeds they grow.

Held in communities across the country in early spring, Seedy Saturday represents a larger movement rooted in collaboration and self-sufficiency. The event brings together individuals, families, and communities to grow their own food and to enjoy cultivating flowers and herbs.

This year’s Seedy Saturday is especially significant as the Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society celebrates its 100th anniversary. The Society invites the community to join in this milestone year by participating in Seedy Saturday and celebrating a century of gardening, education, and community connection.

This year, Seedy Saturday will be held at Algoma Public Health, 294 Willow Ave., on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Seed savers may bring seeds for exchange from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the seed exchange will open to the public for purchases.
