We bought a house last summer that has this big Walnuttree in the back. Unfortunatelly we noticed that the trunk seems to be damaged. We would hate to take it down … is there a way to save this tree?

No not really the bottom is all rotted and it’s only going to get worse, I would say that you get it removed as soon as possible.
Depends on what you mean by save. It can likely be kept alive, but the amount of reduction pruning needed to keep it structurally stable may not leave you with a tree that still retains the appearance of a tree.
