What happened?

Harvested these potatoes in the fall. They have been stored in a frost free earth cellar.

These are stored on behalf of a friend who grew them at his place. No visible disease at harvest. I grew the same variety and stored them close to his in the cellar and mine are fine. Not all of his potatoes have been affected, but many from each box.

Anybody know what has happened?
