Very new to this. I have a pretty neglected bush here. Where do I begin to fix it?

cut it all the way back and let it start over. just under the windows.

It’s generally a good idea to never cut back a shrub by more than a third at one time.

Try buying her some choclate and just say you’re sorry

It’s hopeless IMO. Dig it out and plant a replacement that will flourish at your location

Look up niwaki style pruning. Don’t just swipe the top off

  6. Looks like abelia maybe? If it were mine I would cut it just 1/3-1/2. Use looper and pruners to make cuts at right location versus 100s of shearing cuts

    Quite honestly?

I would take the bush out.

It’s too big to be up against the house and it’s overtaking the window …which is not a good thing from keeping insects out of your home at the least …and an impediment to an emergency evacuation should the need ever arise at worst. Plus it will block the natural light through the window. For whatever reason, the rain gutter was not continued across that section and should be …another good reason to remove the bush.

Chain saw ….then dig out root with mattok

Hook it to your pick up with a chain and give it a tug

Are those stairs to the right of the picture? The shrub looks like it’s partially blocking the access to them. Otherwise, I’d cut out some of the biggest stems as close to the base as you can and see how it responds

  11. Cut it down 1′ from ground.
It will be a really nice bush this Summer.

Cheap shrub to replace if it is, but wait till mid February and prune it in 1/2 or about a foot under the window
