This is my first plant ever I'm taking care of and I spent my fair share on reading up, but I still feel very clueless in my situation.
I got this beauty a week ago and over the first few days a lot of very dry spots on the leaves formed and new leaves a dying pretty quickly, which I had to cut off.
I keep her in a spot with indirect sunlight, but put her near the windows over the day, when the whole sky is cloudy for the whole day. I check moisture twice a day and water her when soil is dry. I use filtered water, but I'm considering getting distilled if needed. I also started misting once a day starting today.
Is there anything I'm missing or I should be doing differently considering the pictures? Is a repot needed?
I'm thankful for any advice!

Welcome to one of the Picky Patty’s of Plants: Calatheas. 😂
I have one that I got off the clearance rack at Lowe’s, so it already had dry spots on the leaves, looked half dead, and I spent half the price of new…. I figured any improvement was a win. lol
All that being said, I wanted to give you a laugh and simply encourage you to be patient. They are a touch temperamental and take time to find that sweet spot of light/temperature/humidity inside your home.
Don’t overwater and check the humidity level. 👍🏻 I would suspect that humidity is probably your biggest culprit in the house and misting is not as humidifying as people think.
As far as repotting, unless you see it being overly root bound, I would put that off for a bit. (Normally I am a big proponent of bring them home, isolate & watch, then repot & integrate, but Calatheas merit special/different treatment)
Oh boy you decided to do a PhD directly without preschool, elementary/middle/high school, graduate/postgraduate school. No worries, though. We’re rooting for you!
