Families are being urged to stop using flat bird tables in their garden this winter following a warning by wildlife experts.
Ecologists say flat bird tables, as opposed to upright feeders, can spread disease, especially in winter when bird food becomes wet and droppings build up which helps bacteria to spread.
Experts at Arbtech say swapping to safer feeders will protect birds and could be a literal life-saver for the wildlife in your garden this winter.
It comes after the RSPB suspended all sales of flat bird tables through its website last winter, prompting an investigation into the possible spread of disease.
It said: “Ecologists at Arbtech are encouraging families across the UK to take extra care during the colder months, when harsh conditions make it far more difficult for birds to find food and shelter.”
The experts also warn that common garden habits may be unintentionally spreading disease. Flat bird tables, for example, can allow damp food and droppings to build up, creating breeding grounds for harmful bacteria.
“Small, budget friendly changes – such as switching to safer feeders, offering high-energy food and providing shelter – can make a huge difference, helping local bird species access food and stay warm,” they added.
Jonathan Stuttard from Arbtech.co.uk said: “We really want to urge all homeowners to think about the nation’s birds at this time of year.
“During winter, even small changes in how we feed and support wildlife can have a huge impact on local species.
“Traditional bird tables can unintentionally increase the spread of disease among birds, when food becomes damp or contaminated.
“Instead, switching to hanging feeders, keeping them clean and offering shelter for birds in your garden are great ways to offer support without breaking the bank.”
Arbtech stresses the benefits to using hanging feeders over traditional flat bird feeders, including the decreased risk of disease as they are more hygienic.
Hanging feeders also help to reduce waste, as birds have less chance of dropping food onto the floor. They are also more versatile and can be hung around different areas of your garden, making them a better choice.
