Kitchen me hates January me hehehe
We are experiencing the same type of weather fluctuations here in Clarksville, TN. Hopefully our house shrubs won’t die ! So far it has happened 3 times this winter, where it will be in the low 70’s for a few days and then drop to the teens! So frustrating!
Blessings ❤! The lambs are so cute 😍
Glad to hear the lambies are doing well and that they have a new home. It's always nice to spend time with you and hear about your plans for spring. Blessings to all of you. 🥰
Jess, me too! In Omaha, not far from the Missouri River – on the Iowa-Nebraska border – I can grow green onions () all year long. But every other type of onion I've tried – bulb onions – never make it. If you can discover and advise us on how to grow onions in a hot-cold-hot area, that would be awesome! Even if I grew 6 onions, I'd consider that a huge win. Or is it impossible?
So nice to hang out with you. ❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Do we have a code for botanical interest seeds
Really cold??? LOL -35 wind chill here this morning!! North Dakota is not for the faint of heart!!
You make me laugh when you talk about how cold it is. Keep adding layers until you fall over because you can’t move or you don’t feel the cold – which ever comes first. Lol. That’s how we were dressed back in the day as kids in the north. You had so many layers on that if you fell over you couldn’t get up then you started laughing which made it even harder to move.
You’re so lucky that you have the ability to purchase onion starts. Where I live the only options are sets or seeds, rarely do you find starts and if you do find some they are too immature to develop to full sized onions by the fall. I know onions are grown in zone 5 but I haven’t had luck with any of the three formats. Our temperatures are also all over the map which adds to the difficulty of a short growing season. I hope to figure out what works sooner rather than later.
Enjoy I wish I am living my garden life through u love u here from Canada
Can’t wait to see the little ones and their antics!
Jess, I think I’m still surprised that overwintering onions undercover for you isn’t an option.
Your tunnel is going to be filled be filled so much goodness!! Super excited for it.
Beet Kvass. So stinking good!
I am done with Green stalk.
That contrast is so relatable 😄
Life on the farm really is a balance between daily routines and unexpected moments — loved the update and checking in on the lambs 🐑
Your silence is LOUD compliance.
Wondering if you might have a little ram lamb available to share with your neighbor in round O, he will have two girl friends ❤️. I have plenty of experience. 🤠
I love your January me, it's just like me 😄
you should try to start onions from seeds….I have had great luck with onions started from seed, much better than with starts and sets. Seeds are the way to go…not sure why, its just what works for me.
Congrats Jess! Your beef stew looks delicious in Greenstalk's magazine. I hope Miah put a camera on those adorable lambs and their antics! Looking forward to seeing more. 🐑❤
Hey! Question! If we have pretty bad pests in some beds the year before how do you treat that before you plant again?
Hi Jess! Could you maybe suggest where I can look for a high tunnel? I live in Montana so I'm hoping to extend my growing season ❤
SOOOOO STINKING CUUUUUTE, THOSE LI'L LAMBIES!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ When one of my grandsons was a toddler, he loved my bottle baby lambs. He said, "Grandma, the little lampies got their sweaters on!" Hard to believe he's 30 years old, now! I have 3 garden benches, plus a table with 4 chairs in my garden. I'm old, and pretty feeble, having had a number if hip replacements and back surgeries, so I usually crawl from garden bed to garden bed, and from raised bed to raised bed. Then, I have to crawl to a bench or chair, to pull myself up. Those seats DO make the space more inviting for visitors, tho! My weather (Missouri) has been crazy! We were about 70° F a few days ago, and a high about 10° F today, Jan 17. THANK YOU, JESS, FOR ALL YOUR SHARING!!! I APPRECIATE YOU!! 🥰🥰😘😘🤗🤗
Thanks for breath of fresh air. I love your optomism and your realism. I bless you.
Such happy news that the lambs are doing well!! <3 I'm so pleased, I hope they continue to thrive and grow!
Now you’re famous. The babies are so cute.
Thank you
Oh Jeremiah! Please do video the lambs (all the babies). Absolutely we all will enjoy them now… but… you will still enjoy them later too. Children… lambs, baby goats, calves, baby "chips", everything grows up and gone way too fast. Precious memories on video… blessings Kiddos! 🙏🙏💕💚❄️ ps we are dropping to below zero Fahrenheit over the next few days… bundle up!
Thank you for sharing ❤❤❤
Onion growing is all about timing. I live in zone 10a and start my onions in the end of October or beginning of November. I get my onions from Hoss. But they always grow out some big onions. Now if I’m late to plant them they are smaller depending on when they were planted out. When I plant them from seed I have to start them in August and pour the fertilizer to them. Then plant them out in October/ November.
I can't get onions to start to save my soul. I only plant starts that I buy and plant them about 3" apart around the perimeter of my raised beds. I also plant nasturtium, basil, and marigolds in the same bed. In the middle goes tomato plants. At least half my onions get huge, but the other half stay pretty small to medium. It takes time for them to bulb up. I'm in Meridian (Boise), Idaho – supposedly zone 7a, but 6B too. We have late, almost nonexistant springs and can't plant out warm winter crops before mid-May. My onions get planted earlier. The heat can get to 100+ during the day. Dahlias get 3pm house shade, but the onions only get tomato shade (eventually). I think the hoop house might not be necessary if your onions are on drip irrigation. God Bless!
It's 11 degrees F here in Wisconsin today. The garden seems so far away…
I agree. Every garden needs a table and chair(s). I’m looking for another chair like yours, one broke. A guy down the street who was moving sold me another set for $20!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 It’s even stronger than my original set. Mid winter. It’s still a little too iffy 🌬️to actually plant outside. Time for a constant large cup of warmth in my hand.☕️
Can you please explain the difference between a greenhouse and a high tunnel??
Onions would probably grow best in your climate if they were fall planted when the weather starts to cool. Keeping them in your high tunnel would protect them from sudden freezes, but you would need to open the sides on warm days. Onions are fairly tolerant of cold weather, but they wither when overheated. I think if you were careful to open and close your high tunnel, onions would do well there.
I need lamb parkour in my life! Set up a live feed!
We miss will!
