Gardeners’ World star Monty Don has shared a makeover at his Longmeadow home that was ‘a lot of hard work’. The presenter and gardening guru, 70, was flooded with praise from his followers after sharing his handywork on Instagram.

Monty, who returns to our screens with the first episode in new documentary series Monty Don’s Rhineland Gardens tonight on BBC Two, shared photos of the transformations he had made in his woodlands garden and mound.

He wrote: “We’ve made some changes to the mound and to the woodland garden, replacing the beds that were on the middle terrace with paving and moving a path so it now lines up with steps.

“It looks natural now but did involve digging out tree stumpsand moving a lot of plants and actually has been quite a lot of work. But I think definitely worth it.”

The changes were appreciated by his followers, with one commenting: “I find sight lines very pleasing in a garden. It’s very ‘Longmeadow’.”

“It looks really looks fabulous and so welcoming. It was lovely before but this is wonderful. Ned and Patty I’m sure supervised well,” a second wrote, while a third echoed: “It looks fantastic always hard work but so rewarding.”

A fourth said: “Hard work and well worth it, looks great,” and a fifth added: “It looks very considered but comfortable, cant wait to see it as every thing settles in and green takes over.”

Monty Don and his wife Sarah live at their home, known as Longmeadow, near the town of Leominster in Hereforshire with their dogs, Golden Retriever Ned and Yorkshire Terrier Patti. Their home is the primary filming location for Gardeners’ World.

The couple married in 1983, with the couple going through their fair share of ups and downs including the collapse of their jewellery business in the 1980s. Their romance began when Sarah was still married to her first husband.

Speaking on the podcast White Wine Question Time in 2023, Monty said: “It was obviously complicated. For me, it was intense attraction at first sight. Her husband was someone I knew very well. I just remember thinking, how come she met him before she met me? Why is the person that you feel strongly attracted to with someone else?”

He said he “wasn’t trying to pinch someone else’s wife or anything like that”, but that he and Sarah had enjoyed spending time together “in a platonic way” while her husband, a botanist, had been away.

He went on: “You know when you’re very attracted to someone, you don’t dare get too close to them or show interest. It turned out we felt the same way but she was married to someone else. To cut a long story short, she decided she didn’t want to have an affair but she chose me.

“I’ve always felt a bit guilty about it but at the same time all’s fair in love and war. You can’t pussyfoot around. I feel sorry for him but it happened and I’m really glad it happened. I have no regrets at all.”
