For us uncultured cacti owners, what are we looking at here 🧐

Grow with 3 sides? I have several that have done this.

  3. It’s a monstrose opuntia. And no, I’ve never seen one before. Very cool.

I wanna see a cross section of that so badly, but would also feel bad for ruining something so unique.

  5. I have tons of opuntias. Never seen this mutation before. Very cool!!

Mutation probably. hybridization is fairly common in habitat for opuntias

Wow almost like its 2 pads criss-crossed. 36 years in the Sonoran desert never seen that.

Yea I live in Tucson and see it at least once pretty much every time I go on a hike and walk past thousands of them lol.

I have seen it once before with my own plant (opuntia humifumosa) . I think it’s kind of similar to a ā€œpineapple pupā€ with Trichocereus in that it starts out as a flower bud and changes its mind to become a pup. Mind you, I’m pulling this straight out of my ass and it’s just a theory so I could be wrong but it makes sense in my pea brain hahaha I might have a picture

I believe this is what a dichotomous opuntia looks like
