Why are they doing this? Outside in the Texas sun? It is not enough water?

Severely etiolated- need way more light

It’s not good enough that they are outside, they need to have full, direct sun on them. Not under an eave or on the north side of a house. Put them on the south or west side of your house where sun can reach them.

  3. More light. To elaborate further:
Right now should be a dormant period. Keep watering down. I’m not sure about Texan climate – in Germany I keep mine completely dry during winter, but in Texas it surely will be a bit different. Etiolation is basically a misbalance of available Light and available water. If you have abundant light, etiolation won’t be a problem. If you don’t have adequate light you can still come by with reduced watering. Your cactus to me looks like it doesn’t get enough light for the amount of water and nutrients it gets.

I have both of these also sitting in direct Texas sun for around 8hrs a day and the love it. They are getting huge.

Need way more light and don’t water during winter they also can grow etiolated when you water during winter

They are against a house, which means that unless they are on the south side, they are being shaded by the house for a large portion of the day. In these photos they aren’t in full sun. You can tell because there are no dark shadows behind any of the plants. Full sun means if you put your head where your plant is and turn around you would actually See the sun, not just the Sky.

I won’t beat a dead horse about etiolation as people already have…but:

If/when you move them to full sun, make sure you do it gradually or you may risk scorching them.

The etiolated parts won’t return to normal. They will stay all skinny and weird. You have two options, leave them but you may risk the cactus becoming unstable as the growth above will return to normal (if the light changes) or you can cut the cactus just above where it begins to stretch. It’ll callous and give you new growth eventually.

How do you people put up with these posts day in and day out the same one post

Either it needs more light or too much fertilizer

Not necessarily etiolated from light may be too much fertilizer at the wrong time

Almost full sun is like almost pregnant.
