Orchids can become somewhat parched and wilted during January, but there’s a straightforward method to revive the plant so it produces much larger blooms in the coming months. The winter months pose challenges for tropical houseplants as they require substantial humidity to maintain leaf hydration, whilst constant central heating strips moisture from the atmosphere, reports the Express.
Positioning an orchid on a windowsill can also create issues, as these spots are frequently draughty during this season and chilly conditions can place excessive strain on the root system. Neglecting orchids means the parched and frigid air can damage flower spikes, increasing the likelihood that blooms appearing next year will be feebler and more diminutive.
Nevertheless, Jon, a specialist from Brilliant Orchids, has revealed you can help revitalise an orchid by providing it with proper nutrients, which can be easily obtained from spare rice water. Jon explained: “Brown rice water provides thiamin, niacin, folic acid, and riboflavin. Use left-over room temperature brown rice water to water in place of regular water.”

Rice water isn’t a fertiliser, but instead a mild tonic abundant in the minerals orchids require to recuperate after enduring a chilly and arid environment throughout winter. Spare rice water will contain vitamin B which promotes robust plant cells and will assist orchids in gradually beginning to flourish once more.
It also holds magnesium, phosphorus and potassium, which are vital nutrients plants require for growth and will significantly help sustain the root system. Healthy roots will enable orchids to store more energy, so once they start receiving enough light, they’ll produce a much healthier flower spike and are more likely to grow larger blooms.

How to use rice water to help orchids in late winter
Firstly, you need to save the water left over from cooking rice. Ensure it doesn’t contain any salt, oil or seasonings.
Allow the water to cool completely, then mix one part rice water with four parts tap water in a spray bottle or watering can. Rice water is rich in starch, which benefits plants, but too much can block the soil and damage the roots.
By diluting the rice water with regular tap water, it ensures the mixture flows freely and drains properly, preventing any starch build-up in the plant pot.
Water your orchids with this rice water concoction every four weeks, and you’ll see much healthier roots which will help the plant bloom once it starts growing again in spring.
