COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – You may be getting the urge to prune some of the trees in your yard but experts say, hold off for a bit longer.

“As one of my colleagues says, hurry up and wait,” said Tim Hartmann with Texas A&M AgriLife. “The worse thing you can do is prune early.”

Hartmann said pruning early can leave your tree exposed the rest of winter and that leaves the door open for an infection.

“What we actually want to do is, we want to wait until these buds are actually swelling,” he said while pointing to an apricot tree.

Don’t wait until you have leaves on the tree, he said.

“We want those to be swelling, even full bloom actually can be a nice time. Then you can see what’s going to be fruitful, what’s not,” said Hartmann.
