One of the RSPCA Isle of Wight team attended a call about an exotic snake spotted in a resident’s garden today (Monday).

The reptile was identified as a Common North Carolina Corn Snake — believed to be an escaped pet, rather than a wild visitor.

The snake, also known as the ‘red rat snake’, is a harmless, non-venomous species found throughout the south-eastern and central USA.

The snake is usually orange or brown bodied, with large red blotches outlined in black down their backs; averages between 30-48 inches in length as an adult; and can live to over 23 years in captivity.

The snake was safely collected and taken to The Carisbrooke Vets, where it’s being checked over to make sure it’s in good health.

From there, it will be transferred to an animal charity with appropriate reptile housing, giving it a safe, warm place to coil up, instead of sneaking around shrubbery.

If this sounds like your missing, hissing snake, please contact The Carisbrooke Vets on 522822.
