Hey everyone,
Looking to sanity-check my experience with variegated Philodendron melanochrysum.
Mine is healthy, actively climbing a moss pole not rooted into it yet though, good roots, stable conditions but the leaves consistently unfurl warped / twisted / asymmetrical, especially compared to my variegated micans growing right next to it (which looks totally normal and elegant).
The melano:
– Tight emergents
– Variegated sections seem to lag during unfurling
– Leaves sometimes “lock” into a distorted shape
– Improves slightly as it matures, but still never looks as clean as non-variegated melano
I’m not seeing pests, rot, or nutrient issues this feels structural rather than care-related.
So my question:
– Is this just normal behavior for variegated melanochrysum due to thin velvet leaves + variegation?
– Or have any of you managed to grow one with consistently clean, symmetrical leaves? I have never seen very large variegated forms yet.
Would love to hear:
– Your setup (humidity, light, pole type)
– Whether maturity actually fixes this
– Or if this plant is just inherently “chaotic” in variegated form
Pics welcome, brutal honesty encouraged.

What %is your humidity? And do you give it nutrients?
My variegated melano is so annoying in this way too that I dont even have pictures of it.
It is under two Barinna T5 light strips in my indoor greenhouse at 65°, 60-65% humidity on a moss pole. I found that, for me, when the humidity gets higher, the skinny stems (it is not mature at all) rot in the middle. I keep the soil evenly moist, but not sopping wet, I do not water the moss pole since the stem rots – it’s just for support, and it’s also built on the thinner side. The roots look great. They’re healthy and starting to fill the pot. The leaves grow deformed, so I’ve been chopping them back, but now Im left with one very pretty leav and two active growth points that will probably inevitably also grow weird as hell. I’m honestly bout ready to chuck it. The variegation is so pretty, but I dont even have but one leaf to show for it.
My regular melano is thriving. No deformities, no rot, same conditions. Maybe in a little less light since it’s sitting under a burle marx with larger leaves.
I don’t know much but could it be a pest? Mine isn’t doing that. I keep it at 75-80% humidity, small moss pole, try to keep soil moist ish
