Hi all,
Looking to get a hedge along the fence in this photo. It's about 40m long and 700mm wide from the fence to the bed.
We were currently looking to getting a viburnum as our hedge as we like the large leaf and look of it. Can anyone recommend these for this area or is there a reason to get something different?
Im open to recommendations. Thanks!

Great choice.
Definitely!
I planted the same species next to a fence in Adelaide and they get cooked every summer. You might be alright if it’s a shady spot.
Good choice – I have two viburnum hedges.
The only thing I’d say it’s that they can grow pretty wide (depending how tall you let them get), so 700mm to the fence may make them cramped, unless you’re happy to keep them trimmed regularly.
I’d also recommend planting each plant 1.5m apart. I planted my first hedge 1m apart but now that they’re grown they’re too cramped and there’s a fair bit of empty space (and they don’t get enough light in winter).
I did my second hedge 1.5m apart and it’s much better and thicker as you can see in this picture.

I planted Murraya or Orange jessamine and they’ve survived scorched Perth summers for the last 4 years. Water them at dawn time twice a week using sprinklers, and maybe an extra by hand to deep watering during hot days. They can go up to a metre high and 70cm wide or bigger
How tall do you need
Lilypilly
Those are fine but I’d get a rosemary hedge if it were me. It smells great and can be used in cooking. Doesn’t overgrow or at least can be easily pruned if it does.
I like Photinia Red Robin personally cause its unkillable
Virbunum is nice though too
Vibernum will need monthly hedging. It will grow over 10m high if left unchecked. Muraya better, or susanqua
A different option would be to grow food trees as espaliers along this. It would take more work but not too much. You’d need to put timber posts every ~2 panels and brace end ones for tension. Then drill holes and run 3 or 4 wires. Lastly an irrigation line with drippers. Then onto a fruit tree centre of each panel. You could have a huge variety. Espaliers along fences won’t completely hide the fence but softens the look and you get the enjoyment of productive plants. That will ultimately be less work than hedge trimming.
I’ve seen your photo #1 at least 3x before. I’m happy you are sizing down the plants.
I recall that the plan is to create some privacy so you don’t have to look at what’s happening on the other side of the fence.
Can you fill us in on the fences aspect?
Soil type, watering etc.
Do you think you should get that fence fixed first.
Have you considered just getting an extension on top of that fence instead of a full height hedge screen? This would be cheaper in the long run and less maintenance.
Eurgh cannot overstate how much I hate vibernum. If that’s what you want go for it but there are so many other awesome hedging plants out there
These will burn in full sun.
Also they attract Thrips which a tiny flies that bite everything they touch.
