Just moved to the mountains of SoCal and I have the most wonderful trees on my property – I’m excited to learn all about them. The previous owners only treated this property as an investment and were trying to get it back to being a home.
I have a few questions in order to know how to proceed. We need to cut the section stemming off from the trunk as it’s blocking the extra driveway that we’ll need to use starting in a few days as we move our second vehicle to the new home.
-
Will cutting off the red circled area kill or damage the tree? If so, we won’t cut it off and we’ll figure something else out.
-
Is the brown area (blue circle) rotting and is it killing the tree? There are smaller spots found randomly around the tree. If so, is it best to remove the tree or is there a way to save it? We want to save it, or at least attempt to if there’s a chance.

Can you tell what kind of tree it is by these pictures? We’re trying to catalog them all so that we take proper care of them. We have 3 young pines that are dying already due to neglect.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

C comments. I very much <3 fruit frees (and not) that share with passer bys. Not all like share.
I can’t tell what kind of tree it is, but the damage looks like it’s from a type of boring pest. You can kinda see some of the areas where woodpeckers have been looking for them. It reminds me of the damage on my peach trees, since where I am they have very susceptible to borers.
That limb looks fine to remove, in fact limbs have been removed from the tree before, as you can see in one of the photos you posted. Just look up a guide on generally how to trim off branches (there is an area where trees can heal more quickly). Understand that trees are pretty hardy, especially established ones. It’s pretty hard to screw up so badly that the whole tree dies.
