Jamie Burrows, of Ransom Avenue, Worcester, was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years, after the incident in St John’s in October.
The 38-year-old appeared before Worcester Crown Court sitting at Hereford on Monday (December 1) for sentencing having pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drink and escaping lawful custody.
The court heard that Burrows had been driving an Audi S3 on Canada Way while unfit to drive through drink and was stopped by police.
Prosecutor Matthew Barnes told the court that the officer, Sgt Attwell, could smell alcohol and Burrows’ speech was slurred.
“Mr Burrows took a long time to get out of the car, it looked as if was trying to decide what to do,” said Mr Barnes.
“He told Mr Burrows that he had a police dog in his vehicle,” said Mr Barnes.
Burrows was arrested but told the officer to get his hands off him
The officer radioed for back-up and Burrows used an expletive before saying he needed back up.
Burrows then sped off and although Sgt Attwell tried to follow him, he was unsuccessful.
Burrows’ car was traced and some 24 hours later, officers went to his house and he was arrested in a garden after jumping over a wall only to find there was a police dog and handler.
Jailing him for two years, Judge Martin Jackson told Burrows he should be going to prison but because he was the breadwinner for his family, he didn’t want his children to suffer so was suspending the sentence.
“You ought to be going to prison today,” said Judge Jackson.
“The only reason I’m not sending you to custody is because of the impact on your children.”
Burrows was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work, 30 rehabilitation activity days and be subject to alcohol abstinence monitoring.
He was also banned from driving for two years and told he must pay £500 costs.
