Back in May 2018, my wife was helping organize a Grade 7–8 school trip to Niagara Falls. Between the bus, insurance, and hotel rooms, the costs added up fast. She asked if I could help raise a little money to make the trip more affordable for the students.

I hadn’t gardened in years, but she remembered how I used to grow vegetables with my mom. So I said yes — and turned a corner of my basement into a mini LED-lit grow room.

Before long, rows of seedlings filled the space: peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, romaine, basil, dill, oregano, green beans, yellow beans — basically everything I could fit under those lights. Once they were ready, we brought them to her school and set up tables outside.

The students sold every last plant.

They raised a solid amount toward the trip, the parents saved money, and the kids got to experience Niagara Falls without the financial pressure. And honestly? It felt incredible to get my hands back in the soil after so many years.

What started as a few LED lights in the basement turned into a meaningful fundraiser and reignited my love for gardening. 🌱💚
