Callicarpa americana. Edible yes, palatable eaten raw is subjective. Some folks think they’re tasty, others think they’re bland. They can be used to make wine and jelly. The birds absolutely love them!

I always eat one when I find them but they kinda just taste like opening your mouth in a perfume department to me, I need to try making jelly some day!

Wonder if they’d have a stronger taste if they were boiled down into a syrup…

Yeah that’s the native beautyberry. It’s not as tasty as it looks, but it’s fine.

Varies from plant to plant, some have a stronger taste than others. The crushed leaves make an excellent mosquito repellent when rubbed on skin and clothing.

  6. American beautyberry (callicarpa americana) is edible, but raw berries are not tasty, However, they they make great jams! The leaves repel mosquitoes and other insects. You can recognize beautyberry by the way the berries form on the bare stems.
