Should I cut my monstera adansonii in 2 and propagate?it went through a wild ride (thrips and root rot and lost its leaves). It has all those different nodes, so maybe?

I’ve grown two of these from a portion of stem with no leaves at all, just in a little shotglsss of water.

You really don’t have much to lose as it is. Chop and prop.

As previously mentioned, you really don’t have anything to lose. Boy, those pests really did a number on your poor monstera. I agree with others who say propping is the way to go. Hope it goes well. Please let us know how it’s going.

I had one that looked like this and got several healthy plants out it. The overall plant was definitely dying so it was nice to reorganize it and give it several new lives.

  5. If you like propping sure but to be honest just get a new one for a few bucks and stick this one in too

There is still green in the leaf. Let it do its thing. It will send out shoots, just wait.

Chop and prop is totally an option, but I figured I would throw in a second, faster, possibility if you are looking for a fuller plant. Keiki paste.

It is a vegitative plant growth hormone suspended in lanolin. If you put a little on a node, it will sprout an additional growth point. I have used it on monstera, pothos, philodendron, hoya, and even ficus; it’s not species specific (even though it’s mostly marketed for orchids). You can get probably 3 or 4 new nodes out of that length of stem.

It works faster than chop and prop because you already have a plant with roots and a leaf to support the new shoot. It can however also be used to encourage side shoots for propagation purposes, which is especially useful if you want to prop by rooting to a moss pole or by pinning to the soil before cutting away from the mother plant (very helpful with species that are slow to prop otherwise, like monstera peru).

You only need a very tiny amount, so you can buy the cheap $5 vials of it on Amazon unless you plant to become a mad scientist (like me) and put it on every vine in your house to grow a Jumanji jungle.
