I was doing some grafting yesterday, and per usual, I was overthinking things. But I may have stumbled on a possibility that might be good.

I've been trimming the ribs down, as well as a slice down the "valley," to keep all green flesh away from the graft area. Then I treated the sides with sulfur and made the last slice on top to provide a good mating surface.

I do the sulfur first because I use medical tape for grafting, and two or three pieces of that don't leave any room for dust afterward.

I was being careful not to drag any sulfur into the mating area, but then an idea struck. What if I did my "tapering" cuts, say a week ahead of time with sulfur, then the next week, cut a cookie off the top and do a graft on that?

Surely someone has thought of this before?

I mean yeah looks great, seems like a bit much though. I’ve never used sulfur on the sides and I’ve never had a problem with that at all. So you do you, cool idea!

Very common way, this way the rootstock is already shrunk down, and the puck off the top where the union is, is the only thing to heal when placing the scion. 💪 💪
