I have a watch chain in my house and it flowered for the first time after probably five years. I thought I had a stinky couch problem and was losing my mind that I spent thousands on a piece of furniture that was wasted from simply sitting on it. After a couple of weeks I noticed the tiny flowers and that indeed the smell was coming from the watch chain. After that I appreciated the smell more, just knowing it’s not sweat stain smell made it much more enjoyable.

Crassula muscosa is infamously stinky when flowering, though I think the intensity of the stink must vary from plant to plant. Some people say it reeks of cat urine and can’t stand it. To me it’s an overpowering beeswax/honey sort of smell, like the candle aisle at a craft store. Not terrible, but kind of borders on unpleasant in the intensity.

To those commenting, how long do the flowers last? Are they easy to remove if you don’t like the smell?

  7. Idiots are out here asking stuff like “Is there a God?” and “How do we ameliorate manmade climate change?”. The real geniuses are out here asking questions like “What is this and why does it smell strange?” and “Will this berry kill me or not?”.

Mine smells like cat pee when it blooms… or maybe a cat peed on it since it’s outside.

Have one flowering at my house right now as well. It smells like rotten honey to me and it lasts for at least a few weeks.

  10. Mine smells sweet, when I read that some people think that they smell like pee I got a lil worried for real 😳
