I did not think I could do it but I did. I’m so happy with myself. If anyone has any shrub replacement suggestions, I would greatly appreciate ideas. Located in Piedmont NC, zone 8a. This spot gets part shade. You can kind of see in the first pic, but to the left is the fence gate so I’m looking for something that is taller than it is wide.

Current options: Carolina allspice, black chokeberry

You don’t want a shrub that will sucker for sure being this close to your gate , you should plant it further away from the fencing , aronia Arbutifolia is very narrow and can get about the size of the burning bush , taller than the Aronia Melanocarpa . There isn’t many native shrubs that will fit this area , maybe Itea Virginica it turns red in the fall .

My son removed a few burning bush two weeks ago (he’s 12 and likes digging lol). So far, I have planted a witch hazel in one of the holes.

Witch hazel is native and should be fine in partial shade, though looks like it grows as wide as it does high, 15-20′ each way so maybe too wide between the corner and the gate. But mine had really lovely colors this fall, lovely yellows, and still has its characteristic blooms.
