Found in yard in Ashland, KY. Brother (no experience in fungi identification) claims they are oyster mushrooms and safe to eat, but they don’t look much like the images on Google, and also grew on the ground (most sources say trees) What are they? Are they safe to eat?

Are you trying to identify a fungus? If so, /r/mycology may be of more help. Fungi aren’t plants — they have their own kingdom just like animals and bacteria.

Those are brown oyster mushrooms. There’s likely wood under the soil that they’re growing out of
Post in one of the mushroom or mycology subs – yes those do look like oysters, they can appear to grow out of the ground when in fact they’re still growing on decomposing wood at ground level or just underneath the ground.
Need better pictures though, if you want mushrooms ID’d you need to include gill pics at the very least.
Post in /r/mushroomID and include a photo of the underside of the mushroom.
mushrooms are not plants – animals and fungi are more closely related than plants
