Stuart Graham, gardener at Casterton Sedbergh Prep School took on a 24-hour challenge, running continuous laps of the school’s famous cross-country course, The Epic.

Setting off at 1pm on Thursday, November 13, Stuart ran 11 laps of the 7 mile route over the fells, battling Storm Claudia through the night before returning to a hero’s welcome from the school at 1pm on Children in Need day.

Stuart said: “I cannot thank everyone enough for the incredible support shown throughout my 24-hour Epic Challenge for Children In Need. The cheering from the children, the staff who walked, ran and kept everything going back at base, and the families who came out to encourage me and donate so generously — it all kept me moving when things got tough.

“I am still coming to terms with the sheer kindness and generosity shown by our community. It even took me an hour to get my lunch on Monday because so many children wanted to stop and talk, which meant the world to me. My feet are still a bit sore, but the pain is absolutely worth it for the phenomenal amount we have raised for a fantastic cause. Thank you, each and every one of you.”

Stuart clocked up a total distance of 123km, and a total ascent of 4250m – over three times the height of Ben Nevis.

Coinciding with the worst of Storm Claudia sweeping the county, Stuart battled heavy rain and gale force winds, ending the 24-hour epic in a bundle of blankets with hot water bottles on his feet and pizza in hand.

Headteacher Kate Martin said: “We could not be prouder of Stuart and everything he has achieved. His 24-hour Epic Challenge embodied the very best of our school community. To see our pupils, staff and families unite so wholeheartedly behind him was truly inspiring. Their cheers, encouragement and generosity showed the depth of kindness, courage and community that sit at the heart of Sedbergh Prep.

“Stuart’s determination to take on such an extraordinary challenge for Children in Need, and the way our community rallied around him, is a powerful reminder of how we live and breathe our values every day. I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported, donated or simply came out to spur him on. It was a remarkable moment for our school and one we will remember for a long time.”

Stuart was supported in the challenge by his wife Laura, his son, daughter, and extended family.

Stuart’s feat of endurance has raised £4,263 already, but donations can still be made at his JustGiving page.
